Talk about Tibet – Self-immolation

I tried to tell the sad story in a very cheerful way.

My inspiration is from a wonderful cartoon
 done by a brilliant Chinese cartoonist.

Set making: a lego style tibetan monk figure
 and a toy fire extinguisher wi
th a rifle attached to its top.

most people around me were put off
when the word self-immolatiojn comes.
They concerned about it but genuinely dont want to look into it.
It is understandable though.
Then it is my job to make the dreadful topic into something
people burst into laughter and never forget.

 

I tried to tell the sad story in a very cheerful way.

I started to make the film
when the number of tibetans who set themselves on fire was 39.
at the moment I exported the finished video, it was exactly 100.

the project is based on a set of stamps

I designed to honor the tibetan martyrs.
there will be more in this seriy, include posters, installations.

In the film, I tried to get 2 points across.
1 is that it is not the number that matters,

each individual case is a tragety.
2 is that to find out why people choose to go through

 tremedous anony to take their own life,
it might be a good idea to listen to 

what they said at the very last moment.

the Patriotic Education Campaign waged in textbooks, 

newspapers, films and monuments since 1989

 is the Communist Party's most successful 

post-Mao political crusade.

In the Chinese educational system 

the comepray history and the ancient history,

art,music,religion,sports,culture and the theory of communism itself 

are twisted and castrated.

Since few people 

actually double-check what they learn at school, 

such disinformation was repeated by journalists 

as well as parents,

 thus reinforcing the idea that the

 disinformation item is really a "well-known fact"

this short film is about the religion of Tibet under the Chinese rule,
playing with the technique of mask which is usually used in covering
obscene scenes in erotic films in that part of the world.
